Holiday Gift Giving that Won’t Break the Bank

cropped_green_gift.jpgThere is no hiding it. With the sudden turn in the weather and the constant barrage of commercials and sales, the holidays will be here in no time. But you’ve been way too busy studying, writing and cramming to even think about holiday shopping.

What’s a girl on a limited budget to do when she’s got a list a mile long and is short on time?

Here are some tips to follow that might just help you keep to your budget and save you time.
Ok you’ve saved up as much as you can and there is a clear number in your head of what you can and cannot spend. It is your goal not to overspend this holiday season and by order all of your friends at Chickspeak, we are not allowing you to charge up any credit and hopefully leave you with a few dollars to treat yourself to nice hot creamy latte when all your shopping is said and done.

Plan ahead. Channel Santa and make a list of who gets a gift. Don’t stray from it. Jot down a few ideas next to each name that will help you in your search when you hit the stores. Nothing is more overwhelming and confusing than shopping at the holidays. Between the crowds, the lights, the sales and the santa elves marching around, any ideas you have will go out the window if you don’t write them down ahead of time.

Give everyone their say. Let your family and friends know ahead of time that you are heading out, the budget is limited and if they don’t give you a few ideas of what you want, then they can’t blame you for what they get. Those who don’t speak up get slippers and socks. They’ve been warned.

Check out the sales. Many online shops offer free shipping. Sales circulars are always showcasing great markdowns this time of the year. You’ve seen your grandma doing it again and again, grab the Sunday paper and see who is slashing their prices. Think savvy and you will save.

Give from your heart. If you take the time to be creative there are so many thoughtful gifts you can give that will not cost you. What was your favorite book in high school? Find it, inscribe it and give it to your little sister. She will be flattered that you would share such a secret. Have great shots stored up on your digital camera from the family summer beach vacation? Enlarge a few and frame them. Nothing melts a mom’s heart like family photos. Grandmas and older relatives would be thrilled with something that doesn’t cost a thing, your time. Treat them to a movie date. Let them pick the movie and share a big box of popcorn and junior mints.  The memory you give to each other will be something you’ll treasure for a long time.
