DIY: New Year’s Resolutions that are Realistic

january_resolutions.jpgOk, I’ve decided to boycott New Year Resolutions. Look at this example and then I will tell you why:

New Year Resolutions 2008
1. Lose weight.
2. Get out of debt.
3. Save the world.
4. Go green.
5. Make more money.

Ok. Fine. This is a great list of goals, but can they be more vague? These resolutions are not only vague, they’re immeasurable and downright overwhelming. Instead of leading you to ACTION, these type of resolutions often paralyze you, because they seem “far away” and unattainable. Why do you think most people slip up on their resolutions by January 3rd? Why?

Because their resolutions are missing a PLAN OF ACTION and MEASURABLE RESULTS.

To be motivated to continue, we need a concise plan of action, which tells us what we must DO, and measurable results, which are the mile markers that tell us HOW FAR WE’VE COME - and how much of the journey is left. So, I humbly suggest an alternative to New Year Resolutions: New Day Resolutions. And what is a New Day Resolution? Simple: a to-do list.Think about it.

You didn’t gain 20 pounds or accumulate $15,000 in debt in one day (Geez, I hope not!). Actually, who we are today is simply an accumulation of the day-to-day decisions we made in the past. So if you want to change your life, you have to change your daily actions. That’s right, rather than thinking of the end goal, think about the day-to-day steps required to achieve that goal.

For example, the New Year Resolution “Loose Weight” translates to the following
New Day Resolution (to-do list):
1. Run/walk 1 mile.
2. 30 minutes of Pilates.
3. Drink 8+ glasses of water.
4. Eat a salad for lunch and dinner.
See everything there is action-orientated and measurable.

Ok, let’s tackle ‘get out of debt.’ This is what it translates to in a day.
1. Cut up all but one credit card (keep the one with the lowest interest rate.)
2. Transfer all balances to the one card with the lowest interest rate.
3. Call credit card co. and ask them to lower that interest rate (because you are a good person and people like you!)
4. If they don’t lower your rate, threaten to take your business and debt elsewhere. (I used to do this in college. It works!)
5. Activate automatic debt payment from your bank account.

Ok, done.

Maybe your goal is to make more money by starting a new business. Here’s your to-do list for today:

1) Declare to the universe your intention.

2) Write a draft business plan or outline.

3) Grab a domain name

4) Create free temporary business card.

5) Join a local group of entrepreneurs.

.
ACHIEVING your New Day Resolutions (a.k.a. to-do list) will lead to new action-orientated and measurable goals and eventually lead to manifesting your ultimate dreams. And the good thing about New Day Resolutions - you don’t have to wait until January 1st… you can start now! Here’s to an abundant 2008!To your wealth, health, and happiness,
