Navigating the Bumps: Planning Your Next Road Trip
Sometimes the best road trips are the spontaneous ones in which you just toss the bare essentials in a bag, hop in the car and drive with the sounds of music blasting, friends talking and laughter filling the space between miles and days.
But even with random adventures, it’s smart to take a minute to make sure you’re thinking ahead and can handle any possible bumps in the road.
Tip #1: Think about worst case scenarios. You should be prepared for a least a little something to go wrong.
Speeding tickets and car accidents: would you and your friends know how to handle these situations? Before hopping on the road, talk about basic “worst case scenarios.” For example, you may decide that if the driver is pulled over, that person pays for the ticket. If there’s a car accident that was the driver’s fault, the driver will pay for the damages, and if there was an accident that was someone else’s fault, well, insurance will hopefully cover it, if not, everyone will split the difference. Create your car rules and make sure that everyone’s cool with them from the start to avoid arguments and unnecessary stress.
Tip #2: Get gas money before you leave home from everyone in the group.
With gas prices climbing and changing state-by-state on a daily basis, you’ll need to collect cash up front for a “gas fund.” Be over-cautious in your estimates for money needed, so you know you’re covered. Last thing you will want is to shell out more than your fair share or find that someone planned on paying you back later- like after college once she’s gainfully employed. Any money left over can be split and redistributed to the group.
Tip #3: Know how to change a flat.
Make sure that someone in your car not only knows how to change a flat tire, but also has done it successfully before and can do it again if needed. Your car should have a basic tool kit, complete with safety flares and flashlight for night-time fixes, too. As a plan B, make sure someone has AAA or another comparable auto roadside assistance membership.
Tip #4: Emergency contacts work both ways.
Tell someone responsible where you are going, how you can be reached if needed and when you should be expected back to school or home. We often think of this as common sense that can be a pain if your parents are the type to want every last detail about hotels, addresses and phone numbers. Having to provide license plate numbers of your friends car to appease your ‘rents worries can be flat out embarrassing, BUT what we often forget is that life still goes on at home and problems can arise when others may need to reach you to update you on news, a problem or issue.
Tip #5: Don’t leave home without these essential items
- Cell phone and car charger
- Extra cash and a credit card (for emergencies only)
- Map-quested directions to and from your destination
- Safety tool kit for fixing flats and phone number of AAA
- Your Camera
Fame!
