Stand Up Ladies Generate Estrogen-Fueled Laughs
When one thinks of comedians, thoughts tend to drift towards names like Dane Cook, Jeff Dunham, Katt Williams and other men.
However, the ladies are still strong in the comedy world.Comedy Central airs specials featuring women regularly, unfortunately these women don’t receive the same kind of wide-spread fame their male counterparts do.
For those of you struggling to find some good estrogen-fueled comedy, here are a few comedians to look into:
Lynne Koplitz
This girl will speak all those dirty little thoughts that run through your mind but were always afraid to say out loud. Koplitz’s views on sex, dieting and marriage are spot on for ladies everywhere. She also has some great bits about life in New York City as a single girl. She’s already had her own half-hour special on Comedy Central and has guest starred on several shows on the Food Network and NBC.
Here’s a clip of Koplitz discussing how hard it is to have sex when you’re tired.
Lisa Landry
Originally from Louisiana, Landry is a laid back, undomesticated female comedian. She has had a half-hour special and has been featured on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend and performs regularly in comedy clubs around New York. She also contributes to US Weekly in the Fashion Police section, has been featured on the TBS’ Bitcoms, and has been a guest on countless radio shows across the country.
This clip features Landry discussing the harshness of makeover shows like What Not to Wear and The Swan.
Megan Mooney
This is a woman who can see the comedy in life even when the joke is about her. Mooney currently resides in Los Angeles and had a half-hour special on Comedy Central Presents and also has been featured on Premium Blend. She tours colleges worldwide and since she’s one of seven siblings her comedy is great for those who grew up in large families.
Here Mooney talks about the disappointment of a bad holiday gift.
Tammy Pescatelli
This no-nonsense woman from Cleveland grew up in a Sicilian home and represents everything that is Italian. She’s loud, brash and brutally honest and that’s something we all need in our lives every now and then. She was featured on season two of Last Comic Standing in 2004. She has also had a special on Comedy Central, has been featured on the Tonight Show and played a supporting role in the film Everybody Wants to Be Italian.
In this clip Pescatellli wonders whatever happened to classy women and proposes her own makeover show.
Amy Schumer
From the outside Amy Schumer appears cute, small and innocent. When she opens her mouth, however, the twisted and hilarious thoughts running through her mind race out into her comedy. You may recognize her from Last Comic Standing as she was featured on season five. The Long Island native has been seen on Live at Gotham on Comedy Central as well as playing several supporting roles on shows like 30 Rock and Cupid.
Here Schumer discusses the difficulty of phone sex when you have a deaf boyfriend.
Lindsay Craven is a 2008 graduate of Appalachian State University, is addicted to watching movies, and hopes to live and write in
New York City one day. Photo courtsey of Lisa Landry’s MySpace page.
