The True Meaning Behind Initiation
When people consider the concept of being “initiated” into a sorority or fraternity, various things come to mind. General assumptions amongst society usually relate to the negative stereotypes and horror stories portrayed in movies. The secrecy behind these organizations has encouraged rumors and misunderstandings regarding the ritual procedures that take place behind closed doors. These judgments conceal the symbolism and ceremonious occasion that hold the meaning behind a new member’s entrance into a life long sister or brotherhood.Greek organizations have been around for centuries and have traditions that resemble the time and place in which they were founded. As members pass through their college years, they strive to live by the values and principles laid out by their founders. The process of welcoming new members into their organization comes with the hope that the newest initiates will continue the sacred traditions, rituals, and practices that have been ingrained in the organization since its founding.
For most members of Greek organizations, initiation is the highlight of their experience. It includes the entire chapter and is conducted in a ritualistic and distinguished manner. The inclusion of symbolism emphasizes the meaning behind the induction of the newest additions to the organization. The promises of faithfulness and lifelong membership to the organization unite past, present, and future members.
The process of revealing the organization’s ritual is usually reserved for the initiation event because this is the first time new members may witness the process, which can only be known by initiated members. These rituals are not specifically for initiations alone, but are used throughout the year for various purposes including the installation of new officers, receiving big sisters/brothers, alumnae receptions, engagements, etc. Often times these ritual procedures are located in a certain “ritual handbook” that is guarded and often times locked by the chapter president.
Once learned, the initiation process is dear to each and every member as an emotional keepsake. It is the common ground that all members stand on in representation of the similarities, as well as differences, that have brought them together under the same umbrella organization.
For most members of Greek organizations, their initiation experiences are met with wonder and appreciation for those who have come before them. This pride in carrying on a legacy of timeless traditions and values is what encourages the continuation of Greek organizations. Initiation serves as a starting point to a lifelong commitment towards the betterment of one’s organization, community and self.
