A Favorite Fiction Chick: Jodi Picoult

JP_080328013848202_wideweb__300x375.jpgMost chicks have heard of Jodi Picoult, probably from the movie based on her book My Sister’s Keeper, but have you checked out her other books?

If you haven’t you should really consider it, especially if you liked “My Sister’s Keeper.” She covers topics that most authors would never think about trying to touch.

Here are ChickSpeak’s picks of Jodi Picoult’s books to read:

The Tenth Circle

Written in 2006, The Tenth Circle has to be one of the most consuming books Jodi Picoult has written. I was only sixteen when I read this book and I did not know what I was getting myself into. The main character, Trixie Stone, learns that her father, Daniel, is not who she thought he was when she is date raped. Not only is the book about Trixie dealing with the agonizing pain of betrayal, but it is also about Daniel’s journey to hell and back to save his daughter from herself. The book takes you on a roller coaster from the greatest happiness of love to the angriest and most chilling depths of Hell. It made me want to jump in the book and just give Trixie a big hug.

My Sister’s Keeper

Now, I haven’t actually finished this book, but the little bit I have read though is so sad that I can’t even begin to explain. Written in 2003, the book is about a young girl named Anna who was essentially born to save her sister’s life. Her sister, Kate, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was very young and has not been able to fight it off. Anna loves her sister, but it gets to the point where she just cannot take it anymore. I promise I’m not giving anything away, this all happens in the beginning of the novel. Not only does the story line bring tears to my eyes but so does the way that Anna describes everything that is happening around her. It twists and tugs at the reader’s heartstrings. You want to feel bad for Kate because she is so sick, but you can’t help but want Anna to win in the end. No one deserves to have someone taken away from them without their permission.

The Pact

This book is unlike anything else you will ever read. It deals with love, pregnancy and suicide, things that people deal with every single day. Chris and Emily seem like the ideal couple. They have known each other for years since their parents have been friends since they moved into the houses next to each other. They fall in love at a very young age and know that it’ their destiny to be with each other forever. Then something happens that no one could have seen coming. It rips apart the families and no one really knows how to handle it. A story unravels that no one besides Jodi Picoult could have concocted. It turns into a Romeo and Juliet type story, showing that love can really destroy you.

Any of these novels can be found at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Books-a-Million and are all written by Picoult:

Handle with Care, Change of Heart, Nineteen Minutes, Vanishing Acts, Second Glance, Perfect Match, Salem Falls, Plain Truth, Keeping Faith, Mercy, Picture Perfect, Harvesting the Heart, and Song of the Humpback Whales

Emma Walker is a Sophomore at Appalachian State University, a sister of the Sigma Gamma Chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi, and is currently working on her first novel.
