I'm new on here and I can see from the other topics that everything is kept pretty light but in my WS 200 class last night we discussed the killings going on it Ciudad Juarez. Women are mutilated and tortured and killed. There have been NO investigations on 5,000 murders. 510 bodies have been found and the rest are missing. It was something I was very unaware of and I don't know what else to do to help except raise awareness.

No one knows who is commiting these murders but it is obvious they are very powerful because the police don't even bother to investigate.

I take everything so for granted in my everyday life...I can't imagine having the everyday fear that I could be murdered by a random group....just something to think about. I hope this gets women thinking about how we can help other women who go through horrible struggles everyday and just being aware.

This article is a random one I found about 4 women whose bodies were found.

What in the world is going on with that foreign exchange student in Italy?? I am just wondering if other people are paying any attention to this news headline. I think it's absurd. I don't know what to think. I get that this girl from US and a girl from the UK went to Italy and roomed together in an apartment. Now the girl from UK was found dead (by a knife) and the girl from the US and her boyfriend are being accused. Mind you her story on her myspace page doesn't hold up to any sort of alibi rather throws a red herring into the mix. If the media focuses on her could they be missing the true murderer or is the evidence strong enough to keep the US girl locked up in prison??? The entire situation is just tragic and I can't figure out what to think. Seems to me we've got an OJ trial all over again. Any thoughts anybody?

i agree with Christina you really have to learn and know what it is to love yourself before you can love another. However, i also think that you know you love someone when you dont have to question it, you just know. You don't have to analyze it or say well why do i love this person? what kind of love is this? you jsut know and it just feels right, i think thats when you know you are truly in love.

Everyone is making valid points. It is all about choice, perhaps a woman does want to study these types of things, but I would urge her to ask why. I think when people make choices, we need to look at our reasonings. Would someone take these courses because they enjoy sewing and cooking as a part of their lives, or is it because they believe these are skills they should possess only because of their gender?

Another part that bothers me is the 'according to scripture' aspect of it. Since women are 'supposed' to be a certain way according to scripture, that opens up a whole new set of issues with sexism.

WOW. Talk about sensationalizing something. If you visit the school's website there are only two things the article (which won't load on my computer) could refer to.

1) a non-degree seeking program for ministers wives (essentially seminary and administrative courses)

2) undergrad HUMANITIES majors have to do 21 electives, some of which may be used towards a concentration in homemaking

There is no M.R.S. degree, nor is there a major in homemaking. What a letdown. I could have really used a good laugh.

I think that a big part of being "in love" with someone verses "loving" someone (ie: friends & family, people you've dated but who you know are not "the one" for you) is that there is a level of chemistry that goes beyond what we can rationalize. I think being in love expands your heart.

Perhaps when you are in love with someone, you have that love as a base in which you want to care for them and help them however possible (again, as you so smartly noted, within healthy boundaries) and do so with out strings, BUT also have the added levels of chemistry and desire... desire that goes beyond anything physical and makes you want to build a life with that person, despite their flaws and the potential challenges involved.

I guess I am thinking about guys I have dated in the past who were so great in their own right, and who I loved,(cared for deeply) but just knew weren't right for me in the long run. Of course, in each case, it took me a while to realize all of that.

Not sure if that helps at all, but perhaps is food for thought. We should do an article in our relationship section on this.

What a good topic!

I will extend this little bit of advice to you: Regardless of who you are thinking of or where you are in your life, you must learn what it means to be in love with yourself first. Before you are able to truly fall in love and have that same love returned, you have to be able to be at peace with yourself, know yourself and trust that you are an absolute treasure. Then, of course, you have to act like it! :-) Not in a self-righteous way or anything, but just in a way that lets the light within you radiate.

Reminds me of a quote a friend of mine emailed to me months ago: (Random)

"A man will swim through an ocean of shark infested waters to give the women he loves a glass of lemonade.......Let him"

Not rational or easily explained, but true.

Hugs,

So how do you know if you are in love?
I believe there are many different kinds of love. Love of your parents, Love of your siblings, Love of a friend, plain love and being in love with a significant other.
For most of the loves listed at the top, I think a major characteristic that defines love is caring about someone that you would try to do anything in your power for them. Notice I said try, you should do everything you can for them without hurting yourself or anyone else in the process.
So thats one characteristic of love, so what are the others? What differentiates loving some one and being in love with someone?
This is the question I'm struggling with. I've heard many people explain it in many ways. I've been told time and time again that it is different for everyone, but aren't there still underlying qualities that define love. It can't just be random. It can't be like "He has a good sense of humor and he makes me laugh, so I love him." There has to be some fixed characteristic of being in love.

laura, I agree. I'm all about choice. But it's still pretty insulting to offer a degree in homemaking and make someone pay thousands of dollars for it. Churches usually have sermons and programs for this kind of thing for free.

I think that's way cool, because some people don't know how to do basic things like cooking and sewing. For some women, being a good wife and a capable mother is as rewarding as any other career. We shouldn't tell women with this ambition that they are insulting to our gender; it's personal preference, and I admire their passion for their relationships. It's not just about tradition.

News media is show business, plain and simple. Funding is determined by ratings, and the best way to get those ratings is to be entertained and/or draw the viewer's attention (ex- "climbing crime rates", Anna Nicole Smith, etc)

I really can't say whether or not it's an act; I don't know Ms. Richie. But as ermiller said, even if Nicole did want to get her life back on track, the paparazzi and the media will find the tiniest thing wrong with her and blow it out of proportion.

Yep, I'm doing it again. Mainly because I think they put something in the food and I feel strongly inclined to get everybody hooked. . . if you like sushi- try Sushi Hana in Towson. It's sooo delicious.

Have you ever found yourself racking your brain for a good restuarant? I hate that. I seem to never be able to think of a good place to dine for whatever the occassion may be. CHECK this site out: http://fordedge.msn.com/Experience.aspx?categoryName=Eat.

They've posted some great restaurants and have this cool interactive map to view the restaurant picks in major cities. What city do you live in and what restaurant would you add to the map?

Being a shoe fanatic, I have to respond to my own post. . . I'm with Sophia Bush. Put purple and suede together and I'll buy 100 of them. LOVE 'em. Am I crazy for not just wanting but having a strong urge to wear purple suede??

If there’s a sign of the times in college admissions, it may be this: Steven Roy Goodman, an independent college counselor, tells clients to make a small mistake somewhere in their application — on purpose.

“Sometimes it’s a typo,” he says. “I don’t want my students to sound like robots. It’s pretty easy to fall into that trap of trying to do everything perfectly and there’s no spark left.”

What Goodman is going for is “authenticity” — an increasingly hot selling point in college admissions as a new year rolls around.

From a recent article from US News and World Report, "The University of Richmond is not unique in its effort to keep the number of men and women enrolled roughly equal in the face of a dramatically changing pool of applicants. Nor is it the school where the gap in admissions rates is the most pronounced. Using undergraduate admissions rate data from more than 1,400 four-year colleges and universities that participate in its rankings, U.S. News has found that over the past 10 years many schools have maintained their gender balance by admitting men and women at drastically different rates.

The schools that are most selective - think Harvard and Princeton - have so many applicants and so many high achievers that they maintain balanced student bodies naturally by skimming the cream of the crop. But at other colleges, maintaining gender equity on some campuses appears to require a thumb on the scale in favor of boys. It's at these schools, including Pomona, Boston College, Wesleyan University, Tufts, and the College of William and Mary, that the gap in admit rates is particularly acute.

What does this mean for applicants? For girls, making the cut might come down to something as simple as the expected field of study. As an admissions officer from a small Midwestern liberal arts college puts it: "God help the female English majors who apply to this school." On the other hand, women hoping to study engineering will find themselves at an advantage at schools like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which over the past decade has admitted women at a rate that is 17 percentage points higher than the rate for men."
