ChickSpeak’s Founder Recognized
March 3, 2008
Christina Twomey, Zeta Tau-Washington and Lee, knew that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of women by helping them to strive for big dreams, strong values and success in the workplace. With this goal in mind, she created ChickSpeak.com, an online organization for young women. ChickSpeak.com’s mission is to stand out as the most entertaining and engaging reflection of women’s life in college – and to serve as a trusted source of support and information that will help young women stay healthy and grounded, and achieve great heights while in school and well after graduation.
“My goal was to create an accessible and engaging online resource for young women,” Christina explains. “I wanted ChickSpeak to provide them with the information, tools and real-life support needed in order to live lives filled with confidence, authenticity, passion and good judgment.” With so much emphasis on things like celebrity gossip – and with women being overwhelmed with so many unhealthy body images in countless media outlets - Christina felt strongly that there was a need for a Web site that focused on the strengths and inspiring aspects of women. “Beyond anything, I felt strongly that we, as young women, have SO much going for us and so much to share with each other,” she says. “Ultimately, I wanted to lead the charge in creating a Web site in which other women could truly be heard, share ideas on topics that matter most to them, and find support and strength as a result.”

“Articles, blogs combine in online community for women”
By: UGOCHI AMUTA
Although they live in different parts of the country, they meet every day to share their thoughts on issues that affect them.
They are a community of college-aged women of different races and backgrounds. Their varying individual interests do not create division among them; instead, it strengthens their communal bond. These women are members of ChickSpeak.com, a Web site comprising articles written by college women with topics including health, beauty, relationships and technology trends.
Members can post comments on articles and build relationships with other members through forums, personal blogs and private messaging.
“Like most women, I experienced high and low moments in college and I always wished there was a community of other women I could trust who were going through the same thing,” said Christina Twomey, founder of ChickSpeak.com. “I thought ‘what’s out there online? Is there a secure online community where college women can share their experiences and support one another?’”
The answer to these questions was “no,” so Twomey said she decided to create ChickSpeak.com. ChickSpeak is different from online networks Facebook and MySpace because it has strict privacy settings.

Christina Twomey Launches v1.2 of Chickspeak.com
26 y/o Christina Twomey recently launched v1.2 of Chickspeak.com, a community portal for college women that aims to educate and inspire. Like many young entrepreneurs, Christina made the plunge despite other success in other fields. “After graduation, I landed what I thought was my dream job in Washington DC. I was an event planner, working directly under the owner of a prestigious company (a la Devil Wears Prada). Our clients were literally the world’s elite: royalty, rock stars, socialites and politicians. I took it all in and learned crucial things about business that later inspired me to create ChickSpeak.com.” In late 2005, she began pitching the concept and people started to come out with both time and money to lend a hand.
“It was a challenge to keep momentum going while we took the past year to create the latest version of ChickSpeak, but I’m passionate about this, see the deep need for it and am just so grateful for the amazing support and recognition we’re getting. Since launching the new site a couple weeks ago, I see this growing and taking shape… it’s exciting!” The site features daily articles, tips, forums, and hosts a blog platform for users. “We’re an evolving concept and are open to anything we can do to best support and encourage young women to dream big dreams, grown in strong values and achieve success as they move forward in the world!” The site features a profile section called “Be Inspired” and Christina is looking to highlight women who are creating positive change in their communities.
